Logic without Logic

Image result for ignorance
I came across an wonderful quote in a book on Discrete Mathematics. It applies to several things in life and our attitude in life. Here it goes

Symbolic logic has been disowned by many logicians on the plea that its interest is mathematical and by many mathematicians on the plea that its interest is logical. - A N Whitefield

Inference: And as a result it is disowned by both.

Apply to Life: I have been in this is situation several times. For instance, when you study mathematics (or any complex subject that needs hard work to master) in school we hear teachers saying that you will understand it much deeper when you go to college. And after a couple of years when you are in college, your lecturer will say "you would learnt it in school" and just skim through it.

We often get caught in the tiny window of ignorance due to negligence (when people treat you under qualified when you are young and over qualified when you are old and as a result you never get qualified). Break the window

More you share, the more you learn

Knowledge is the only thing that grows when shared. All the other things diminishes when you share. The idea is during the sharing process, you get questions from curious minds that helps to understand the subject more. You tend to uncover a lot of different perspectives by mere thinking. Another perspective is that you tend to study the subject from multiple sources and revise the subject that makes the understanding little deeper.

After a little experience in programming/software development, i wanted to study programming from the scratch. (Gyan from OpenGyan). So, from yesterday, i have started an exercise of reading through Discrete Mathematics. I m planning to follow the book Discrete Mathematics With Applications (Buy from Flipkart.com). I got this book sometime last year and never found a time to read beyond first chapter. This year, i m planning to study this book with a strong focus on solving all the exercises and couple more books on theoretical computer science.

The idea here is to read, solve problems, share in my workshops and repeat it. If possible, i would be posting interesting puzzles and problems so that it helps folks who are following my blog. Nothing hurts. Once again it is knowledge sharing.

Another few books i find it valuable to read are - Write Great Code (guess, there are few volumes)

Together, we are stronger.

Happy learning.

Puzzle - Who is Knight and Who is Knave

This is a puzzle that i read in internet sometime last week and thought of sharing it here.

There is an island that has people who always speak truth (knight) or people who always lie (knaves). Unfortunately, you need find the way to the capital of the island. You are standing at the fork and there are two roads - left and right. There are three people, let us call them A, B and C, who are native of the island standing near the fork. You approach them, they tell you the following statements

Two of us are knaves, one of us is knight and the road in the left goes to the capital.

Will you be able to find which road goes to the capital - is it left or right?
